About Us
The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) is a government agency that works with the federal government. It is responsible for various tasks such as the research and development of nuclear power, promotion of nuclear science, energy conservation and peaceful use of atomic technology.
Since it was founded in 1956, PAEC has built many institutions to develop food irradiation technology and nuclear medicine radiation therapy for cancer treatment, which are helpful for the country’s economic development. It also holds conferences and conducts researches at top universities in Pakistan. Besides being involved as a scientific partner with CERN since the 1960s where Pakistani scientists have worked on particle accelerators and high-energy physics experiments among other things; PAEC staff often visit CERN to participate in projects led by this European organization.
It used to be until 2001 that this entity represented all civilian aspects related to radiation safety control, development of nuclear weapons, their testing etcetera but then these functions got transferred under Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) along with National Command Authority under Prime Minister’s Office
